Trainer Brett Crawford and owner-breeder Ridgemont look to have a really exciting prospect on their hands in the form of Real Gone Kid.
The latter showed his class when making all the running to down some of South Africa’s top sprinters in a pinnacle stakes at Kenilworth on Saturday and he looks set for bigger and better things.
Real Gone Kid, an impressive winner of his two starts leading into Saturday’s WSB Leaders In Ante Post Pinnacle Stakes (1100m), was given a typically confident ride by the Ridgemont Highlands retained Anton Marcus.
Marcus had his flashy mount quickly away and the pair went out to make the running.
With 200m left to run, Real Gone Kid appeared to be in command, only for reigning champion sprinter Rio Querari to come with a storming late run.
However, the line came in time for Real Gone Kid, and the chestnut four-year-old stayed on to score by a neck.
Rio Querari showed his intentions for the season ahead with a good run in second (he was conceding the progressive winner 3kgs), with former champion sprinter Kasimir finishing another two and three quarter lengths away in third.
Now a winner of five of just nine starts, Real Gone Kid, who looks headed towards the G1 Cape Flying Championship, claimed Saturday’s sprint in a time of 65.38 seconds.
The regally bred colt sports a pedigree which suggests Real Gone Kid could prove an exciting and attractive future stud prospect.
A full-brother to promising filly Stiptelik, Real Gone Kid is a son of four times Australian champion sire Snitzel and the Jet Master sired Equus Champion, and dual G1 winner, In The Fast Lane.
