The Ridgemont Highlands based five time G1 winner Canford Cliffs could be back in the headlines before too long, with big plans on the cards for his high-class son Salouen. The latter, who ran a game race when fourth to outstanding champion Enable in the recent G1 King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Qipco Stakes, could be embarking on international travels –unless his connections opt to run the entire in the historic Ebor Handicap at York (due to be run on August 24th).
Salouen could make a swift return in the Longines Grosser Preis Von Berlin in Germany next Sunday, or could make his first ever appearance in handicap company in the £1million prize on the Knavesmire on August 24. His trainer Sylvester Kirk said: “He ran another good, tough race in the King George. He picked up some nice prize-money and we were very pleased with him. He’s in the Group One at Hoppegarten.
We don’t normally turn him out so quickly as we’ve been running in such big races, but we’ll have a look at that and see what the ground is like. The other option is the Ebor. With that sort of prize-money, you’ve got to have a look at it and I think the trip would be fine. It will probably be one or the other of those two races. We could have run him in the Group Three at Goodwood on Friday, but I’m glad we didn’t because the ground would have been too fast.”
Salouen, who accounted for the likes of G1 Japan Cup hero Cheval Grand, G1 Investec Coronation Cup winner Defoe, and G1 Investec Derby hero Anthony Van Dyck when fourth in the King George, also holds entries for both the G1 Corner Group Irish St Leger and G1 Qatar Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe.
