She needed the run – but a smart effort!
Having her second run after a rest, the Sabine Plattner owned Saartjie got the better of a late duel with the tough as nails Happy Chance to win the SplashOut Gr3 Victress Stakes at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Saturday.
In the process she booked her berth in the Cartier Gr1 Paddock Stakes on L’Ormarins King’s Plate day in three weeks time.
Both daughters of Ridgemont’s late Fort Wood champion Dynasty, Saartjie and Happy Chance provided the entertainment, with the latter looking a winner as Richard Fourie bounced her to lead inside the 200m.
But Corne Orffer knew what he had under him, and Saartjie (18-10), despite needing the run, upped her game to score a 0,30 length victory in a time of 111,96 secs and register her maiden graded stakes success.
Returning from a ten week break, Happy Chance (17-2) opened her options going ahead with a smart showing over the 1800m.
Another showing up well after a 19 week break, Hold My Hand (14-1) finished best of the rest and 1,25 lengths back in third.
A R700 000 National Yearling Sale purchase, Saartjie was bred by Shadwell Stud and is out of the twice-winning Redoute’s Choice mare Shaama, who raced under the Mike de Kock flag.
Saartjie has won 4 races with 6 places from 11 starts for stakes of R642 613.
